Jim became a member of the Lunenburg Curling Club in the late 60’s and served on many committees before becoming president in 1978. As president, he managed the installation of the cement floor in the ice shed. He has remained active in the club and over the years has been Chairman of the Entertainment Committee and Match Committee. He was the recipient of the Jessen Falkenham Award which honors the volunteer of the year.
He started curling while in the Lunenburg District Fire Department and has represented Nova Scotia at the Firefighters Nationals in the following years:
1974 Thunder Bay, Ontario (2nd Stone with David Beck, skip)
1987 Thunder Bay, Ontario as skip
1992 Winnipeg (mate with son, Jamie Myra, skip)
1995 Dryden, Ontario (mate with son, Jamie Myra, skip)
Jim and his wife, Judy, traveled across Canada with their son, Jamie, and daughter, Jackie Lee, when their children represented Nova Scotia at the Junior Nationals. Jamie was mate at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and Jackie Lee was skip in Vernon, B.C. and Trois Riviere, Quebec. Jackie Lee also curled in the Junior Canada Games in P.E.I.. As a family, they have made lasting friendships and memories through these curling adventures.
Over the years, Jim has served on many other organizations in the town, including president and committee chairman.
Jim and Judy own Stan’s Dad and Lad Shop and Famous Town Ladies Shop in Lunenburg. Jim started working at Stan’s in 1960 and purchased the store in 2000. They purchased Famous Town Ladies Shop in the mid 1990’s. You still find Jim in one of their stores each morning at around 6:30.
Off season, Jim golfs. Since 2000, Jim and Judy have spent time in Florida and North Carolina where, for the last 2 years, Jim begins each day with a round of golf.
Jim is an avid reader of the Chronicle Herald’s Sports, Province and Obituary sections. He has a reputation as the Barbecue King to his friends and family for whom he loves to cook. But watching their five grandchildren grow is the Myra’s special joy.
(07/24/08 update) Jim along with Eric Miller, Chris Comstock & Hubert Francis were this year's winners in the Hit For Health golf tournament. The event raised over 35K for the South Shore Regional Hospital.
