Barney started curling in 2005 when he joined the LCC and learned the basics under the tutelage of Pat Oldfield and Heather & Jim Eisenhauer. One of his most exciting curling experiences was a near crash on a snowy road while driving to Kentville for a masters game.
Born in Galway, Barney left Ireland in 1968 for Africa. He has worked in construction management on a number of large scale projects in South Africa, Namibia, Qatar, Ireland, Canada, the United States, Turkey, Argentina and Barbados. He and his wife, Halifax-born Susan Newman-Bennett, were married in 1992.
In 1996, while working in Argentina, Barney traveled to Nova Scotia to check out Susan’s home province and meet her relatives, Barney found the area around Lunenburg so appealing he and Susan started house hunting and found an appealing 160 year old home on the shores of Rosebay. Barney retired in 2001 and returned to Nova Scotia. Soon thereafter, they started a grand renovation project, Barney doing all of the finishing carpentry.
Susan is a very early retired mental health counselor. Susan and Barney enjoy traveling, and in particular, they enjoy touring by car. Some of their more adventurous trips have been trekking in Nepal, driving through the Atacama Desert in Chile, and a trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina, along the coast of Uruguay to Brazil. In 2005, they rented a car in Istanbul, Turkey, and drove more than 3000 km through central Anatolia and returned to Istanbul along the Mediterranean coastline. In 2007, they explored the area around Bergen in Norway. They also did a house exchange in Galway, Ireland, and found that a great way to travel. This year they want to explore Newfoundland and the Gaspé Peninsula.
While officially retired, Barney is currently working as a mentor to young engineers working in construction management on a run-of-river hydro project near Whistler in British Columbia.
Barney enjoys carpentry and sailing. He has recently finished reading Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.
