An Interview With Kathy Fish

(Editor) When did you join the LCC?
(Kathy) I took the class in the winter of 2006 and joined up in January of 2007. I love the strategy and skill of curling which is not something you can experience in California.

(E) Can you recall any curling highlights, fond memories or horror stories?
(K) Curling highlights, fond memories and horror stories are all wound up in the last game of the season - Winter 2008 Tuesday ladies game when our team mate informed us that she needed that 4th mug to complete her set.... and we didn't know if we could accomplish that. Great fun.

(E) When did your move to Lunenburg?
(K) My husband and I moved to Lunenburg in January 14, 2002 and give thanks (almost) daily for our decision.

(E) Where else have you lived?
(K) Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and Carmel/Monterey California with a short stop-over (1 ½ yrs) in Pennsylvania.

(E) Tell us about your few career.
(K) Under the pen name, Kathleen DeVanna Fish, I authored and published the popular "Secrets" series of cookbooks and guide books including the award-wining "Cooking with the Masters of Food and Wine". Twenty-six books in print later, I sold the business and left for Pennsylvania to join forces with the Rodale Book Publishing Company as their Executive Editor for their Lifestyle and Gardening publishing division. The opportunity was a very exciting endeavor, as we launched two (2) magazines and some 160 + books. Before embarking on a writing and publishing career, I owned and operated three businesses in the travel and hospitality industry. Seven (7) years ago we started the Cottage Connection in Nova Scotia and today manage over 90 + privately owned homes, most of which are vacation rentals on the South Shore.

(E) And a few words about your spouse.
(K) My best friend and partner in life, Robert Fish, has created a most impressive career as an award-wining photo journalist over the past 30 years in addition to being a driving force in a thriving publishing company.

(E) a few words about your travels?
(
K) We love to travel, eat and drink fine wines, which is why we started a cookbook/guidebook publishing company. A bit of "gypsy in my soul" best describes us. Our travels have taken us throughout North America, Europe, Mexico, Tahiti and New Zealand. More travels to come.

(E) What are your current interest
(K) The extraordinary community we live in. I really enjoy living in Lunenburg and all that the Maritimes has to offer. Maybe more so because "I am from away".

(E) What do you do off season?
(K) A passionate equestrian (who purchased her horse in Tennessee, then took him to California, then on to Pennsylvania and finally stopped in Nova Scotia - he will NOT get back on that truck). who is happiest when taking a 3 - 5 hour trail ride through the woods or on Hirtles Beach. An avid boater, kayaker, gardener, cook and yoga person. Never enough hours in the day. Did I mention I love books!

(E) What are a couple of titles that you have recently read?
(K) I love to read and actively participate in a book club that features great books, fine food and superb company. Some of my personal favorites are Ami McKay, The Birth House; Jeffrey Eugenides, Middlesex; Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love; Sara Gruen, Water for Elephants; Greg Mortensen, Three Cups of Tea;  Janette Walls, The Glass Castle.  I would read more if I didn't have to work.
