Leighton Davis
Leighton and his wife, Arlene, have lived in Martins Brook on the shore of Princess Inlet since 1980 . Leighton was born in Winnipeg and has lived in Vancouver and California.
He worked as a surveyor and town planner before taking up painting full-time in the Vancouver area. He moved to Halifax to attend the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and liked Nova Scotia so much he stayed and became Artist in Residence and Director of Saint Mary's University Art Gallery.
Leighton began curling in his 20's and was a school mate of the Braunsteins, (the schoolboy Brier champions). He curled in North Vancouver and at the Dartmouth Curling Club while living in Halifax and has been a member of the Lunenburg Curling Club since 1997.
Leighton has lost over 90% of his vision to two retinal vein occlusions. Having limited sight, he has worked out a system that allows him to continue curling with great skill. He uses a head-mounted telescope to sight the skip's broom and then translates that position to a pre determined point on the near hog line. As he leaves the hack he heads in the general direction of this point and releases the stone when he is close enough to the hog line to see his imaginary point.
Leighton is also a member of the Bluenose Golf Course and he will play in a blind golf tournament next September (2008). He still paints watercolours, listens to books recorded on CD by the CNIB and is interested in genealogy.
