Ivan Corkum
(photo - Ivan & Armenia at home)
Ivan was born and raised in Bayport and moved into his current home on the Lunenburg – Bayport road in 1955. Ivan and his wife, Armenia, were encouraged by Doug Himmelman to join the LCC in 1997. They both took lessons. Neither had ever curled before but they had skated on ponds and Bayport Harbor. Armenia gave up curling but Ivan continued on and thoroughly enjoys the camaraderie that the masters curling provides.
Ivan worked as a marine engineer and diesel mechanic starting with Fisheries and Oceans Canada for six years. He was a Keeper of the Lunenburg Harbor Lighthouse for 9 years working 12 hour shifts. For two years he worked on Doug Himmelman’s boat, the Arctic Sealer, carrying freight to the DEW line installation in Labrador. He then worked for JB Nickerson in Riverport before retiring in 1989. Armenia was the Lunenburg & Queens Counties Registrar of Probate for 28 years.
The Corkums have a son, Scott, and a grandson, Josh, who live on Spectacle Lake.
The Corkums own a cabin on Big Mushamush Lake and spend the summers there returning to Lunenburg only to mow the lawn. Ivan occasionally carves wooden ducks and enjoys watching baseball and hockey.(Click on pictures for a larger view)
