Bill Miller

If you enjoy finding out more about your curling colleagues through these online profiles, you can thank Bill Miller. Bill is our hard-working webmaster and it was not only his idea to include member profiles as part of the website content, he has also written most of them himself.

Bill's own profile is a bit of a jaw-dropper! Bill and his wife Gareth settled in Lunenburg after an incredibly varied life path. Born in Ohio, Bill studied physics at the University of Rochester and Columbia University.

His "first interesting job" was as an inventor's assistant. (Who knew inventors employed assistants?) Bill and Gareth were married at New York City Town Hall, though things literally got off to a slow start: Bill left Gareth waiting a tense thirty minutes in the City Clerk's office because of a pokey subway!

And then the fun began:
The Millers left the United States and spent seven years in Australia, living in Sydney and Turramurra. Bill worked as a waterfront fitter-turner, a technical writer, and finally a system analyst for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Bill reports that they then returned to the U.S. "to participate in Ronald Regan's trickle-down economy" and, "while waiting for the trickle," they bought a mini-farm in Ohio and raised pigs, cattle, chickens, ducks, geese and goats. Apparently this wasn't enough to keep Bill busy as he also started a computer software consultancy.

Bill "retired" in 2003 and the Millers began scouting the coast of Maine for a desirable waterfront home. Their search eventually led them to Nova Scotia where they looked at properties along about three-quarters of its coastline before settling on Lunenburg and applying for permanent residency under the entrepreneur program. They are very happy with their choice.

In 2009 Bill and Gareth started a business –FolkArtMaritime.com. This was originally strictly an online enterprise but in 2011 they opened the beautiful gallery at 10 Pelham Street.

Bill was introduced to curling in 2005 through the club's Learn to Curl program. Two years later, he volunteered to create a website for the club. This year, he undertook a major re-design and expansion of the website. Anyone who has ever attempted any website work will appreciate the many volunteer hours that Bill has contributed to give our club an attractive and up-to-date web presence. Thank you, Bill! After all your travels, we're glad you and Gareth have made Lunenburg your home. (by Linda Loth)
