West Nova Fuels Curl for a Cause
This event shines again as our biggest and best in
its 10th anniversary year. What
fantastic contributions from sponsors, volunteers and
curlers!!!!!!!!! Where would you find a group of
more dedicated people volunteering time and skills and donating food
and prizes? There were over 500 people involved
in this weekends’ Curl for a Cause, an annual curling bonspiel which
is dedicated to raising funds for the Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital
. This was the tenth anniversary for the event.
Thanks to the presenting sponsor West Nova Fuels and to all other
sponsors, and there were many of them. This year the event raised
over $30,000 which has been earmarked for a new vehicle which will
be used to transport patients. Twenty four teams
consisting of over 100 curlers took the ice starting Friday evening
and the bonspiel wrapped up on Sunday. The
champion of the main event (Section A) this year was the team of
Stephen Rhodenizer, Peter Mosher, Mike Tanner, Ron Hrushowy and Max
Mosher. The teams of Kim Black, Liz Strickland,
and Kevin Mayo won the other sections.
Special thanks to the chair of the event, Anne
Cosgrove, the entire organizing committee, and to all the people and
firms that sponsored, volunteered, and donated prizes and food for
the event. This was truly a community effort and
the success shows the strength and will of the people of our curling
club and this community. The Lunenburg Curling
Club is proud to be a partner for this fund raiser.

Youth Spiel
Lunenburg Curling Club
hosted its annual Bonspiel for Junior Curlers
February 19-21, 2010.
Laura Allen led the charge with much help from her parents,
David and Elaine and many other parent volunteers.
The event was a huge success with 20 teams participating.
Four teams from our club participated and three of them placed first
or second in their division. Laura has been very
active in creating a fun and competitive Junior program which is
necessary for the long term health of our club and the game in this
region. Many thanks Laura on a job well done.

Executive Meeting
The next executive meeting is on Tuesday, March 9,
2010. If anyone has suggestions or ideas to
improve our club, please contact a member of the executive.
Mark your calendars, our AGM is scheduled for
May 26.
Some members of the executive are moving on after
the season is over. They have provided great
volunteer service to the club and we thank them for all their
efforts. It is time for some new blood on the
executive and we are taking nominations. We are
looking for someone to lead the membership committee and the events
committee. We also need a director and a vice president for the
board. In addition, we need a few people on the
house/building committee. Please contact Eric
Walters, Lindsay Miller or Scott McVittie if you would be
interested. We have a great bunch of people and
the workload is shared. We meet once a month
throughout the curling season. Please consider
serving on the executive. It is imperative that
we have a full executive to make the club run smoothly for the
benefit of all members.
Building Fund, Donations, and LAFF
This year we were forced to withdraw a major
portion from our building fund to pay for a new condenser.
Our budget is set to operate on a break even basis.
Our membership dues, our sponsors and our fund raising events
create the revenue needed to operate our club and pay our bills.
There is no surplus at the end of each year to add to our
building fund.
We would like to gradually re-grow this fund, so
that we can continue to maintain and upgrade our facility and be
prepared to tackle any unforeseen repairs. Some
of our ice equipment is getting old and we will have to sharpen our
rocks in the not too distant future. In the near
term we would like to put a fresh coat of paint on the entire
interior of our ice shed and replace the score boards.
With both the short term and long term in mind,
the Lunenburg Club is kicking off a new fund raising campaign for
the decade and will be accepting all donations which will be put
through the Lunenburg Athletic Facility Fund (LAFF)
where a tax deductable receipt will be issued to by the town.
In order to track the donations, it is best but not essential
that they be dropped off or sent to the curling club and our
treasurer will forward them to the town office.
Cheques may be made payable to The Lunenburg Curling Club c/o LAFF.
To kick start our 2010 Decade campaign, Lindsay
Miller, our Vice President and soon to be President, has donated all
of her winnings from one of the recent Friday night 50 /50 draws to
the club through the LAFF fund. Thank you
Lindsay! We are off and running.

Correction from previous newsletter
regarding correct name on cheque; the note should read:
Cheques should be made payable to “The Lunenburg Curling
Club” with a memo or note on the bottom left corner of the cheque
which states: c/o LAFF or Re: LAFF.
Thanks for your understanding, good
curling!!
